Who doesn't love Chex Mix? A snack that goes way back when, and always a fun one around the holidays.

For years I had just been buying Chex Mix at the store but this year I figured it was due time to try making it at home. And now I'm hooked because this fresher, buttery version is just that much better!

I've listed three common options to cook it. My personal favorite is the oven method but all work well.

With the slow cooker you just have to be available to stir every so often which can be a bit tedious in my opinion, and the microwave works fine but I think the perfectly crisp texture of the oven option wins.

Here we use a homemade seasoned salt blend (including salt, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika and sugar). The great thing about that is that you can have more control over amount of salt, and you can switch it up (using other spices or adjusting those listed here).

It's a versatile recipe with so many options. Or just stick with the classic because you can't go wrong with it as is!

Stack of cut rice krispie treats on a platter.

Rice Krispie Treats with the Best Ratios

Rice Krispie treats were first made back in 1939 by Malitta Jensen and Mildred Day at Kellogg’s company for a fundraiser. They’ve lasted for generations as such a popular treat here in the U.S.

And for good reason. These are one of the easiest, quickest treats you can make and they only require 3 simple ingredients you make likely already have on hand. Plus they are inexpensive.

Then of course there's the fact that people of all ages love them. Sometimes if I don't know what to bring to a party I just go with rice krispie treats and I rarely return home with any left.

Rice Krispie treats were actually one of the very first things I learned how to make. And since then it's probably a bit crazy how many times I've made them (definitely in the hundreds).

My version (or I should say my Mom's version, she taught me how to make these) uses the same ingredients as the classic, I just use different ratios.

We are talking more marshmallows and more butter! It makes them deliciously sweet and chewy, and perfectly rich and buttery!

Once you try them this way you'll likely never look back! These addictive treats are just too good!

Puppy Chow Muddy Buddies Recipe https://www.cookingclassy.com/puppy-chow-muddy-buddies/ https://www.cookingclassy.com/puppy-chow-muddy-buddies/#comments Sun, 01 Dec 2019 06:58:14 +0000 https://www.cookingclassy.com/?p=42540 My favorite way to make Puppy Chow AKA Muddy Buddies! Easy as always with the perfect flavor and ratio of ingredients. All you need is 6 ingredients and you're moments away from one of the most highly addictive snacks off all time! A classic must have recipe!

Bowl mounded full of puppy chow muddy buddies.

The BEST Puppy Chow Muddy Buddies Recipe

Since I was probably 10 years old Puppy Chow, or what we call Muddy Buddies, have been one of my favorite treats and of course they were one of the very first things I learned how to make.

They're a regular thing around here (I make them probably once a month), and I love taking them on trips and bringing them to parties. My whole family is obsessed with these! They're also great for Christmas gifting to those without allergies.

They are unbelievably easy to make and hard to mess up. No mixer required, and no oven or stovetop needed. All you need is a microwave and a few basic kitchen tools (bowl, measuring cups, spatula), and about 10 minutes of your time or less to prepare them.

So what's my tip for the best puppy chow?? Milk chocolate chips. I mean think about it, do Reese's peanut butter cups taste good with dark chocolate? No. Peanut butter and milk chocolate were made go together, otherwise dark chocolate overpowers and drowns out the flavor of the peanut butter.

If you insist you can use half semi-sweet chocolate chips and half milk chocolate chips but I don't recommend all semi-sweet chocolate chips or it's just too much if you ask me. I've tasted both and hands down milk chocolate wins no question. Try it and you will see what I mean!

Fried Ice Cream https://www.cookingclassy.com/fried-ice-cream/ https://www.cookingclassy.com/fried-ice-cream/#comments Sat, 04 May 2019 22:17:51 +0000 https://www.cookingclassy.com/?p=3901 The perfect Fried Ice Cream without the deep frying mess! Creamy vanilla ice cream is formed into rounds, then rolled through a sauteed buttery cinnamon cornflake topping and finished with a drizzle of chocolate or caramel sauce — talk about decadence!

Fried ice cream cut into to show ice cream center. It is drizzled with chocolate sauce, topped with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.

Easy Fried Ice Cream without the Deep Fry!

Several months ago, I went to a local Mexican restaurant for dinner and finished with one of my favorite desserts, fried ice cream. As I sat there slowly savoring each bite and all of the delicious flavors it had to offer, I really thought about the process and asked myself, what is the purpose of frying it if you really are only frying the coating?

Well, I thought, I'm going to try a cheater's fried ice cream recipe.

This homemade fried ice cream has everything the normal version has to offer, but it lacks all the tedious steps, lengthy prep times, and oily mess that comes along with the real deal. I decided to try simply frying (more of sauteing really) the crunchy cornflake coating and then rolling the ice cream scoops in the coating of crumbs.

Plus, butter vs. oil, that's a no brainer! Butter tastes way better so I went with butter instead for the sauteing.

I hope you have a chance to try this soon, especially if you've been scared away from preparing fried ice cream at home due to its frying method. You'll love this deliciously indulgent, easy-to-make dessert!

Seriously once you start eating the Caramel Corn Snack Mix you won't know when to stop! In other words don't say I didn't warn you. This is probably my favorite caramel popcorn recipe to date and I've made my fair share of caramel popcorn. What makes this one so special? It's not just caramel popcorn, it's caramel - popcorn, crisp rice cereal, salty pretzels and crunchy pecans. It's caramel popcorn with the works and your going to love it!

Crunchy Caramel Corn Snack Mix

Caramel Corn Snack Mix

If your family are basketball fans then this is most definitely the perfect treat to make to munch on during the game, no other snacks will matter. And for me I'm already planning on making it again for an upcoming road trip.

Crunchy Caramel Corn Snack Mix ingredients shown here.

Everyone of us absolutely loved this caramel popcorn! And I loved how easy it was to make. You just boil together a few ingredients then toss it over the mix of popcorn, cereal, pretzels and pecans and bake it in the oven for 30 minutes. It's probably a bad thing it's so easy to make because it's just so dangerously good!

Crunchy Caramel Corn Snack Mix

For this recipe I used pecans. They're a healthy snack or a great addition to your favorite baking and dinner recipes. They are even delicious in chicken salad too. Now what are you waiting for?? Head to the store if you don't already have the ingredients for this recipe and get cookin!

Pretzel Kettle Chip and Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats

Rice Krispies Treats get a total upgrade here with the addition of salt pretzels and kettle chips to balance out the sweetness then they're finished with a decadent layer of chocolate! A treat everyone will love!

  • 6 1/2 cups rice krispies cereal
  • 2 cups Kettle Brand Sea Salt Kettle Chips, (crushed to smaller pieces*)
  • 1 1/2 cups broken pretzel sticks ((break into pieces about 1/2-inch))
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 (16 oz) bag large or mini marshmallows
  • 12 oz. milk chocolate chips or chocolate melts
  • Multi-color sprinkles ((optional))
  1. Add rice krispies cereal, kettle chips and pretzels to a large mixing bowl and set aside. Spray a 13 by 9-inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray, set aside.
  2. Melt butter in a non-stick pot over medium-low heat. Add marshmallows and cook and stir constantly until marshmallows have melted.
  3. Remove from heat. Pour rice krispies cereal mixture into marshmallow mixture and gently stir and toss with a spatula to evenly coat. Pour mixture into prepared baking dish.

  4. Spray a spatula with non-stick cooking spray. Spread and gently press mixture into an even layer in pan using spatula.
  5. Melt chocolate in a microwave safe bowl on 50% power in 30 second intervals, stirring between intervals until melted and smooth.
  6. Pour and spread chocolate evenly over rice krispie treats. Sprinkle evenly with sprinkles if desired.
  7. Let chocolate set in refrigerator, then return to room temperature to rest (so the treats aren't cold). Cut into squares and store in an airtight container at room temperature.
  • *Sometimes the Kettle Chips are larger than others so if they seem larger you can measure out an extra cup because the bigger ones will measure differently - you should get about 1 cup crushed chips. They don't need to be crushed too small, just enough that they are small pieces.

Rice Krispie Treats in Fun Pumpkin Shapes

No matter how old you are rice krispie treats never get old! I still make them all the time for a quick treat and I’ll never get sick of them.

Here I’ve made them into a fall-inspired treat that both young and old alike will love! Whenever I take them to a Halloween party or Thanksgiving dinner they disappear in no time (ugh and I can never stop at just one).

I’ve mentioned in the recipe if you are making them for adults I’d use the marshmallow fondant, then for kids use the green airheads as pictured.
