Gluten-Free Brownies allow our Celiac and gluten-sensitive friends to enjoy the delicious, fudgy dessert classic without any distress. This gluten-free brownie recipe gives you a rich chocolate flavor without the use of expensive and grainy gluten-free flour. Instead, it uses cornstarch, sugar, dutch-processed cocoa powder, eggs, butter, and melted gluten-free chocolate for a soft and chewy texture. Add your favorite nuts and fool everyone with the taste!

Fudgy Gluten-Free Brownies

These brownies are my first attempt at gluten-free baking (other than things like meringues and such that are naturally gluten-free) and I’m happy to say, they were amazing! Thanks to these I would be happy to try more gluten-free recipes in the future.

These were so good that I honestly didn’t even miss the flour—all I could think of was how fudgy, chocolaty, and rich they were with those perfectly chewy edges and the crumbly shell-like top layer. Even if you aren’t on a gluten-free diet, I would highly recommend these brownies!

Ice Cream Topping

The first day I ate them on their own and the next day I mixed them into some creamy cookie dough ice cream – it was seriously the best upgrade on store-bought ice cream (and I may have had a hard time resisting continually going back for more brownie pieces to add in, just maybe :).

Because these don’t contain any gluten ingredients they do have a slightly different texture than a regular brownie, but in a very good way. I’ve tried almond flour brownies, dairy-free brownies, and many other gluten-free flour blends but this recipe relies on the unsweetened cocoa powder with chocolate melt and vanilla extract to balance the flavor. The result is amazing.

They reminded me of a velvety truffle, the kind that melts away in your mouth – these are made mostly of chocolate chips after all. I also love the light added crunch of the pecans and the nutty kick of flavor they give compliments the brownies perfectly. Feel free to try almonds, walnuts, or any other nut stirred into your brownie batter.

Please try these decadent gf brownies soon—they don’t disappoint.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a mixing bowl whisk together cornstarch, cocoa powder and salt, set aside.
  • Add chocolate chips to a microwave safe bowl, top with butter and heat mixture in microwave on HIGH power in 20 second intervals, stirring after each interval until melted and smooth.
  • Stir in sugar, then mix vanilla and eggs one at a time, mixing until combined after each addition.
  • Add dry mixture and stir until well blended and smooth, then mix in pecans.
  • Pour batter into a well buttered 8 by 8-inch baking dish (you can also line the baking dish with parchment if desired, then pour batter over parchment) and spread into an even layer.
  • Bake in preheated oven until toothpick inserted into center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached, about 35 - 38 minutes.
  • Allow to cool completely then cut into squares (I found mine cut cleaner after freezing for about 45 minutes - after cooling, if you can waiting any longer).

I had not eaten anything gluten-free prior to making and then sampling these brownies. They were DELICIOUS! I made them exactly as written in the recipe and I could not believe how good they were. I made them for a friend who needs GF food, but I will definitely be making them for all my friends, regardless of their need for GF foods.

I’m excited to try these! Making dinner for a family who just had a new baby, the family is gluten free, so I was looking for a dessert to go with the dinner. Question: Can the brownies be frozen? Love your site!

Hi April – Yes they can be frozen, so nice of you to make them dinner! I’m so happy you’ve enjoyed my site!

I’m having guests over who are on gluten-free diets so I have agonized over what I can make that will satisfy them as well as my other guests who just love desserts. I have tried several recipes and they were all “yuck” as my grandkids would say. But this brownie recipe is fabulous! It may be my “go-to” brownie recipe forever, even when I don’t need a gluten-free option. Thanks!

Made these on a whim when I ran out of standard flour – my flatmates and I loved them! They’re definitely my new go-to recipe. Thank you!

My brother is gluten free so I make these for him every holiday. However, everyone who tries them, gluten free or not, LOVES them! Thank you for the recipe, these are great.

Hi! Thanx for amazing recipe. Could I substitute the corn starch with arrow root powder? I’ve been told it’s similar to the cornstarch and healthier.

I can’t say for sure because I’m not very familiar with the best gluten-free substitutes out there.
